栗原針山 ― DAYS
私たちは、一日一日を積み重ねることで人生を生きています。
一日は誰にとっても等しく24時間ですが、同じ日は二度と訪れません。そこには異なる記憶があり、感情があり、出会いがあり、喪失があります。時間は等しく流れ続けますが、人が感じる時間の長さや重み、密度は、経験した出来事や抱いた感情によって人それぞれ異なります。栗原針山の《DAYS 日々》は、その当たり前でありながら見過ごされがちな事実を、「日」という文字を繰り返し書くことで見つめ直すシリーズです。
「日」は、もともと太陽を象った象形文字として生まれ、「太陽（自然・宇宙の循環）」と「一日（人間が営む時間）」という二つの意味を持ちながら、数千年にわたり書き継がれてきました。栗原は、この最も根源的な文字を用い、書体や筆致、縦横比、そして墨の滲みに変化を与えながら、ほぼ同じ大きさの紙に一日一日の違いを描き出します。作品は、温度管理を徹底した墨、表現に応じて選び抜かれた紙、適した水、さらに季節ごとの気温や湿度など、さまざまな条件を精緻に見極めながら制作されます。そのため、一枚として同じ作品は生まれません。その固有の違いは、等しい長さを持ちながら、一つとして同じではない「一日」の姿と重なります。展示空間に連続して並ぶ作品群は、一冊の暦のようでもあり、一人の人生絵巻のようでもあります。それぞれは独立した「日」でありながら、積み重なることで時間の流れそのものを形づくっていきます。
文字とは、本来、人と人とが意思を伝え合うための道具であり、言葉や出来事を記録するためのものでした。栗原の《DAYS 日々》では、その役割を超え、「日」という文字そのものが時間を映し出す器となります。何気なく過ぎ去る一日も、二度と繰り返すことのできない、かけがえのない一日であること。その静かな事実を、《DAYS》は私たちにあらためて問いかけます。 —文・北井画廊

We live our lives by accumulating one day after another.
Although every day consists of the same twenty-four hours, no two days are ever the same. Each carries its own memories, emotions, encounters, and losses. Time itself flows at a constant pace, yet the way we experience its length, weight, and density differs from person to person, shaped by the events we live through and the feelings we carry. Shinzan Kurihara’s DAYS is a series that invites us to reconsider this simple yet often overlooked truth through the repeated writing of the character 日 (“day” or “sun”).
Originally created as a pictograph of the sun, the character 日 has been passed down for thousands of years, embodying both the sun—the cycle of nature and the universe—and the human concept of a single day. Using this most fundamental of characters, Kurihara expresses the uniqueness of each day through subtle variations in calligraphic style, brushwork, proportion, and the diffusion of ink on sheets of nearly identical size. Every work is created through a meticulous process that considers carefully controlled ink, paper selected for its specific qualities, the appropriate water, and the changing temperature and humidity of each season. As a result, no two works can ever be identical. Their individuality mirrors the nature of our days: equal in duration, yet each entirely unique.
Installed in sequence, the works resemble the pages of a calendar or the unfolding scroll of a human life. Each instance of the character 日 evokes a distinct and independent day, while together they gradually give shape to the continuous flow of time.
Writing was originally created as a means of communication and a way to record words and events. In DAYS, however, the character 日 transcends its linguistic function to become a vessel that reflects time itself. It quietly reminds us that even the most ordinary day is irreplaceable—one that can never be lived again. Through DAYS, Kurihara invites us to reflect on the precious uniqueness of every passing day. —Text by Gallery KITAI
