Sanmu Kunisada

Sanmu Kunisada (b. 1964, Ashikaga, Tochigi, Japan) is an artist based in Koriyama and Tokyo who continues to explore the expressive possibilities of the written character. Kunisada is known for works centered on a single character or a small number of characters. Drawing upon the multiple meanings and associations embedded within words and kanji, he distills images and ideas that resonate deeply with his own sensibility, transforming them into compelling visual expressions. Over the course of his career, Kunisada has continuously explored the relationship between ink, space, and line, developing a distinctive practice he describes as “Bare Language.” Free from decorative excess or technical display, this practice seeks to reveal the essential energy of the written character and the physical act of writing itself. His works embody both strength and delicacy, creating a visual language that is at once direct and evocative. Alongside his studio practice, Kunisada has presented numerous solo exhibitions, live performances, and workshops throughout Japan and internationally. Particularly notable are his improvised calligraphic performances, in which a single character emerges through dialogue with the audience and is executed in real time. Transcending linguistic and cultural boundaries, these performances have resonated with audiences across Europe, North America, and Asia.
