石本美帆は、字形や構図を柔軟性ある多様な解釈で構成する作品を制作しています。彼女の作品は、ぬくもりやあたたかみというような、温度感のある線や墨色が特徴的で、作品が生きているような線の呼吸を常に意識して制作をしています。彼女の制作のテーマの根幹には「変わるものと変わらないもの」があり、生と死、無常感、揺るぎないもの、個人と全体などを想起させるような言葉を多く選びます。それは、彼女が幼少期に妹を、青年期に父を亡くした経験が影響しており「人はいつか必ず死ぬ、生と死は常に隣り合わせ」という思いが色濃く反映されています。また、彼女は文字の歴史や形の面白さに強い関心を持っており、制作の際には頭の中で、既存の文字を構成する要素を一旦全てバラバラにして、現代を生きる自分なりに再度組み立てるという作業を繰り返しています。小さいものを大きく、短いものを長く、わざと線を歪ませたり、位置をずらしてわざと寄せたり離したりして自分なりの形を模索しています。それは文字を「読む」という固定概念への反抗でもあり、人生においても固定観念に縛られず自分の本当の気持ちで生きるべきだという、自分自身へのメッセージでもあります。

Form / Break / Flow

Miho Ishimoto creates works in which character forms and recompositions are constructed through flexible and multifaceted interpretations. Her practice is distinguished by lines and ink tones that convey a sense of warmth and physical presence. With the hope that her works will continue to live on even after she herself is gone, Ishimoto is constantly attentive to what she calls the “breathing of the line” in her process.

At the core of her practice lies the theme of “what changes and what remains unchanged.” She often chooses words that evoke life and death, impermanence, constancy, and the relationship between the individual and the whole. These themes are deeply informed by her personal experiences of loss—the death of her younger sister in childhood and her father in early adulthood—which have instilled in her a profound awareness that life and death always exist side by side.

Ishimoto also holds a strong interest in the history of written characters and the inherent fascination of their forms. In her creative process, she mentally deconstructs existing characters into their constituent elements, only to reassemble them anew from her own contemporary perspective. By enlarging small elements, extending short strokes, intentionally distorting lines, or shifting their positions—bringing them closer together or pulling them apart—she continuously searches for forms that are uniquely her own.

This process represents a quiet resistance to the fixed notion of characters as something merely to be “read.” At the same time, it serves as a personal message: a reminder to live without being bound by rigid conventions, and instead to remain faithful to one’s true feelings. Text : Gallery KITAI
